Best apps to run open-source AI models on iPhone in 2026

Updated · Data checked on the App Store on 20 October 2026

To run an open model such as Gemma, Qwen or Llama on an iPhone, you need an app that downloads the model once and then answers on the phone with no server. For the widest choice, PocketPal AI loads any GGUF model from Hugging Face and its code is public. For a free, simple app with a curated list, Locally AI. On iOS 27, Enclave offers the most models in an app with optional cloud models. Pinku and Private LLM have shorter curated lists.

On 20 October 2026, none of these five App Store descriptions lists the newest families, Gemma 4 or Qwen3.5. PocketPal can load them anyway if you pick a GGUF file that fits your phone's memory. Phone-sized models (about 0.4 to 5 GB) are much weaker than ChatGPT or Claude; see the guide to open-weight models for what each family is good at.

How we checked

We read each app's App Store page in the US on 20 October 2026: description, version, price, in-app purchases, privacy label and ratings. Model families are copied from the descriptions; we did not count models inside each app.

Order: how many open models each app can load and how current its list is, then requirements and price. On a computer the equivalent tools are Ollama, LM Studio, llama.cpp and Jan; see Ollama alternatives for Mac and iPhone.

From the team at Saga Labs: we make Pinku, one of the apps here. We built it because tools like Ollama and LM Studio expect some technical knowledge, such as picking a model file and a quantisation or using a terminal. Pinku is for everyone else: install it from the App Store, tap a model and chat privately, with no terminal and nothing to configure. The trade-off is a short list of small models chosen to fit each device, which is why it is not first here.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run Gemma or Qwen on my iPhone?

Yes. Apps such as PocketPal AI, Locally AI, Enclave, Pinku and Private LLM download an open model once and run it on the phone. Phone-sized versions (up to about 4B parameters) are the realistic choice.

Which app can run any Hugging Face model on iPhone?

PocketPal AI loads any GGUF model from Hugging Face. The others offer curated lists.

Do these apps work offline?

Yes, after the first model download. Enclave also has optional cloud models in Pro; those need the internet.

Is there an app that runs Gemma 4 on iPhone?

On 20 October 2026 none of these five App Store descriptions lists Gemma 4. PocketPal can load a Gemma 4 GGUF file if one fits your phone's memory.
